Electric vs Hybrid Cars
Knowing the differences between electric and hybrid cars can help you decide which one to buy. What’s best for your lifestyle in New Castle, Wilmington, and Newark, Delaware? To find out, Sheridan Ford put together this quick guide to go over the advantages of both types of cars. After you read this overview, we invite you to take a test drive of your favorite.
What Are the Advantages
of a Hybrid?
If you decide you prefer a hybrid car, it will derive its power from a combustion engine and an electric motor. The two systems work in tandem, so you’re never without a power source.
When driving at lower speeds and in more residential areas such as your local neighborhood, it relies on the electric motor. For longer-range trips, and when your speed increases, the engine will kick into gear. Whenever you hit the brakes, the regenerative braking system creates more energy for the battery pack.
With this type of car, you will not need to plug in the car to charge, and you’ll still be refueling when your hybrid needs it. If you live in an apartment or rent your home, a hybrid will be ideal without the need for a home charging station.
The hybrid provides excellent gas mileage, and many drivers find it more powerful than a conventional gas-powered car. Although the vehicle does emit some gases, it’s not nearly at the level of a gas car.

What Are the Advantages
of an Electric Car?
An electric car only uses a battery and an electric motor. Not one vapor of gas will exit your vehicle, and you’ll experience incredible gas mileage. Many electric cars can keep going for at least 200 miles on a single charge, which means fewer stops on the road.
If you own your home and perhaps have a garage, you can have a home charging station installed. You could easily charge your car overnight so that it’s ready for your ride to work in the morning. It’s best to keep your car in a climate-controlled garage, if possible, to preserve and protect the battery.
Having your own charging station will relieve you of trying to find a public charging station. Generally, it may take 10 hours to charge your car to the level you need, so it helps to be able to recharge at home.
Plan ahead if you want to use a public charging station. It may take an hour for your car to charge, so if you have somewhere to be at a certain time, make sure you’re on target. If you’re going a longer distance or to a place you don’t typically go, research ahead of time to see where public charging stations are available.
With an electric car, you will not be scheduling as many service visits. Also, charging your car will eventually cost much less than filling it with gas, especially if you can charge at home.
