2019 Ford Explorer Review

It’s time to check out the 2019 Ford Explorer, now available to lease or buy at Sheridan Ford. The 2019 Explorer is available in five trim models (Explorer, XLT, Limited, Platinum and Sport), all with various features that other SUVs in its class cannot compete with.

Performance and Capability

The 2019 Ford Explorer has three engine options, two of which are Ford’s EcoBoost® engines. The 3.5-L Ti-VCT V6 engine delivers 290 HP and 255 lb.-ft. of torque. It is standard on the Front-Wheel Drive Explorer and XLT models, and optional on the Limited model. The FWD model has a fuel economy of 17 mpg city/ 24 mpg highway and a combined 20 mpg. This engine also has 4-Wheel Drive capability, and is optional for the Explorer, XLT and Limited models. The 4WD model has a fuel economy of 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway and a combined 18 mpg.

The 2.3-L EcoBoost® engine delivers 280 HP and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. It is standard on the Front-Wheel Drive Limited model, and optional on the Explorer and XLT models. The FWD model has a fuel economy of 19 mpg city/ 27 mpg highway and a combined 22 mpg. This engine also has 4-Wheel Drive capability, and is optional for the Explorer, XLT and Limited models. The 4WD model has a fuel economy of 18 mpg city/25 mpg highway and a combined 21 mpg.

The 3.5-L EcoBoost® engine is the best-in-class V6 power and delivers 365 HP and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. It is standard on the 4-Wheel Drive Sport and Platinum models. 4WD model has a fuel economy of 16 mpg city/ 22 mpg highway and a combined 18 mpg.

The Explorer’s fuel tank can hold 18.6 gallons, so you can enjoy an impressive range between refueling.  

The 2019 Ford Explorer features Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive with a Terrain Management System that includes settings for Normal, Mud/Rut, Sand and Snow/Gravel/Grass.

The 2019 Ford Explorer also has two available tow packages: Class II Trailer Tow Package and Class III Trailer Tow Package. Class II requires 4WD and the 2.3-L EcoBoost® and has a maximum towing capacity of 3,000 lbs. Class III requires 4WD and the 3.5-L EcoBoost® and has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs.

Technology

The 2019 Ford Explorer features Ford CoPilot360™, which is Ford’s combination of technology and safety to provide a safer driving experience for Ford owners. These features include:

  • BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Keeping System
  • AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control
  • Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision warning with Brake Support
  • Auto High Beam Headlights

The 2019 Explorer also features SYNC® 3 capability, FordPass™ Connect, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ capabilities. Additionally, the 2019 Ford Explorer also features an Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, which alerts you as the time to get your oil changed approaches.

Space and Cargo

The 2019 Ford Explorer has seating for up to 7 and is spacious in both passenger comfort and cargo room.

  • Head room: 41.4” 1st/40.6” 2nd/37.8” 3rd
  • Leg room: 42.9” 1st/49.5” 2nd/35.3” 3rd
  • Hip room: 57.3” 1st/56.8” 2nd/40.7” 3rd
  • Shoulder room: 61.5” 1st/61.0” 2nd/50.8” 3rd

The 2019 Explorer has a total passenger volume of 151.7 cubic feet. Behind the first row, the 2019 Explorer has 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space, 43.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 21.0 cubic feet behind the third row.
