What is Ford EcoBoost®?

Sheridan Ford is home to numerous Ford vehicles equipped with an EcoBoost® engine. Ford unveiled the EcoBoost® engine in 2011 in response to the 2008 economic crisis and rising gas prices. The need for improved fuel economy and more efficient engines was all too clear.

The Ford EcoBoost® engine, a gasoline turbocharged direct injection engine, optimizes the car’s engine without sacrificing any power. Ford engineers created an engine that works harder and smarter. The EcoBoost® combines three elements:

1. Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT)
2. Turbocharged Performance
3. Direct Fuel Injection

Ti-VCT opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves independently of each other to optimize and improve efficiency. This allows for better power and torque in Ford models. It lowers RPM and improves fuel economy. The turbocharger forces an increase of air that would otherwise be wasted into the engine. With more air, and fuel, the engine becomes more powerful. The direct fuel injection directly distributes fuel to the engine in a more effective manner, so none is wasted.

As you can see, mechanically, the three paired together create better engine output. Advanced technology and hundreds of thousands of lines of computer code tell these elements when to work together to ensure a smooth operation between the transmission and engine.

Not only does the EcoBoost® improve power, but it has decreased greenhouse gas emissions.
